"Morning Mountain" Girdwood, AK June 19 9:05 AM

(quite good internet in Homer - hopefully I'll catch up)

Not quite the same as my Valdez Morning Mountain

Time to eat again ... huge portions and great staff

We took a short drive after breakfast and saw this house being built - really something.

We had lots of plans for the day, but the weather didn't cooperate. Our glacier cruise was cancelled because of high winds and then it started to rain. I though I would catch up with this blog, but the internet was at a snail's pace and nothing would upload or download. We drove around and looked at some of the interesting homes in Girdwood.

I saw a flyer for a house for sale so we checked it out. Here is what $699,000 will buy you in Girdwood.

Jack Sprat Restaurant - our dinner choice for tonight.

Finally it stopped raining so we decided to go to Crow Creek Mine -

"This mine, opened in 1896, is still operated mostly as an attraction for visitors by the pioneering Toohey family. They use the paths and eight small original buildings to show off the frontier lifestyle and teach about gold mining. Rabbits and ducks wander around, and weddings are held in the pleasant compound. A bag of dirt, guaranteed to have some gold in it, is provided for gold panning, and you can dig and pan to get more if you have the patience for it. Crow Creek Road, off the Alyeska Highway, is only partly paved and can be quite rough and muddy in the spring.

Lots of campers along the way

Perhaps it is historic, but it is also home to some of the largest and meanest mosquitos known to man. (Remember the mosquito is the Alaska State Bird!). We got out of the car, walked a few yards, walked back to the car, and left. Back in Girdwood we tried to buy repellent. Luckily we got one of the two cans left at the store. If you'd like to read more about the mine sans mosquitos, here is their website -

The entire area is one large gravel pit. It makes Newtown look tiny.

When we got back to the hotel, we saw this limo in the driveway -

The driver opened the door for a photo op -

Not a rental. Someone who obviously wants the world to know he is important.

It was cold and dreary enough for the hotel to start the outdoor fire pits.

Back at the hotel; rainy outside; time to kill before dinner; Spa in the hotel - What to do? Answer!
Blue to go with the temperatures.

Time to eat again - dinner at Jack Sprat

The food was delicious - just to make you drool, we shared Spring Rolls and the Mixed Field Greens salad with Goat Cheese. For dinner Jeff had Alaskan Cioppino and I had Dol Sot Bibimbap.

After a digestive walk, it was back to the hotel and bed - hoping for better weather tomorrow.
